Much of the difficulty faced by teachers is having pupils coming from classes where a step or move has been described or called by another name. By having CWDC terminology, whilst retaining and recognising other influences, the teacher's job should become less complicated and ultimately allow dancers and choreographers to use a recognised set of steps and foot patterns so that we can all enjoy western dance in all its styles.
The linked sections Definitions and Diagrams take you through the terminology that has been used and amended by the CWDC. You will find many of the terms and descriptions the same as those of other organisations. We are not trying to "re-invent the wheel" but to standardise the terminology in a form that everybody can understand. We recognise that some of the steps and patterns are and have been used for many years in other forms of dance, most notably ballroom. Of course many equivalent terms originating, as did the dance form, from the U.S.A.
Whilst recognising the historical and technical correctness of the terminology from other sources, it was felt important to offer the CWDC terminology definitions with as much jargon and multiplicity of names removed. Where necessary we have cross referenced to other names with the letters "AKA" (also known as).
The CWDC Terminology book and it's definitions are a fundamental part of the National Dance Teacher qualification. Other parts of the book contain associated diagrams which show basic dance positions for partner and couples dance, foot positions and dance floor room alignment. This last section provides the basic criteria to enable couples to dance Two Step, Waltz, Pony and many others. It contains essential information for couples that wish to start out in competition or try a dance style just for social pleasure.
